Top 5 Countries Worth Exploring in 2025 and Beyond

Based on travel forecasts and trending destinations for the later part of 2025, here are five countries seeing a surge in popularity for travel, tours, and adventures, along with the reasons behind their trendiness:

1 .Japan

Reasons: Japan continues its post-pandemic surge, combining modern metropolitan experiences with rich, ancient culture and nature.

Major Event: The World Expo 2025 in Osaka (running until mid-October) is a significant draw, increasing interest in the entire Kansai region, including Kyoto and Nara.

Diverse Appeal: Cities like Tokyo offer world-class food and unique experiences, while smaller cities and regions like Kyoto and emerging spots like Ine offer traditional experiences, temples, and tranquil escapes.

Adventure: Opportunities for adventure travel are growing, including ancient walking routes like the Kumano Kodo and Nakasendo.

2. Sri Lanka

Reasons: This island nation is trending as a more accessible and varied destination, especially for those seeking a mix of culture, nature, and adventure.

Variety of Experiences: Sri Lanka offers pristine beaches, vibrant forests with wildlife (like elephant safaris in Udawalawe), misty hill country with tea plantations, and ancient cities (the Cultural Triangle).

Adventure and Culture: Iconic experiences such as climbing Sigiriya Rock and the scenic train ride from Colombo to Kandy appeal to adventure and culture seekers.

Re-Emergence: It is increasingly seen as a hidden gem for travelers looking for authentic experiences outside of heavily-touristed destinations.

3. South Korea

Reasons: South Korea is moving beyond the primary draws of Seoul to attract travelers interested in its beautiful natural and cultural sites.

Cultural Blend: Its cities, like Seoul, perfectly blend modern innovation with deeply-rooted tradition, offering high-tech experiences alongside temple-laced mountain forests.

Adventure and Reflection: The trend favors nature and reflection, making its volcanic island trails and misty mountain ridgelines for hiking and serene forest paths increasingly popular.

Accessibility: South Korea’s smaller size makes it easy to explore different regions, and its overall global cultural influence (K-Pop, K-Dramas) continues to drive tourism.

4. Morocco

Reasons: Morocco offers a vibrant, geographically diverse, and culturally immersive experience that is relatively accessible from both Europe and North America.

Diverse Landscapes & Adventure: It’s a prime destination for trekking and adventure, featuring desert sands (Sahara Desert camps), snow-dusted mountains (Atlas Mountains), and beautiful coastlines (Essaouira).

Cultural Immersion: The bustling, ancient medinas of cities like Marrakech and Fes provide rich cultural immersion, architecture, and world-class food experiences.

Increased Accessibility: New direct flight routes, such as from the US to Marrakech, are making it easier for more travelers to visit.

5. Portugal

Reasons: Portugal continues its rise in popularity, favored for its diverse appeal, strong value, and unique blend of city life and natural beauty.

Diverse Appeal: It appeals to many types of travelers, offering stunning coastal beaches, world-class cities with ancient landmarks (Lisbon, Porto), and beautiful wine regions.

Adventure: Diverse landscapes and excellent hiking trails make it a top choice for active and adventure travelers.

Value and Culture: Compared to some other Western European countries, Portugal offers excellent value, a rich history, and world-renowned gastronomy, making it a compelling destination for a prolonged trip.

Your pictures and descriptions are very helpful. I don’t travel much, but based on your recommendations, I think I’d choose Portugal. I see water! And you said wine regions. 🙂

Travelling by cruise ships is a great way to see many countries in a short period of time. I have visited four of these five countries in the last two years and Sri Lanka. in 2019.

My travels abroad have all been in the pages of books and friendships…I love many things about Japan, including the food. Friends in the Reiki Community travel to the holy mountain periodically, and recently our church had visitors from the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima. These included students (two in college, one in HS) and an 84 year old Hibakusha (survivor – he was 4 when the bomb was dropped). It’s so powerful when they share their stories, and commitment to bringing awareness.
